Situated on the road to Dale on the outskirts of our town lies 83 acres of an area often referred to as “the jewel in the crown of Haverfordwest”.
The Enclosure Act of 1838 transferred 83 acres of rough land to the Mayor , Aldermen and Burgesses. Their instruction was to ensure that it was made available for the recreation and leisure of the neighbouring population at their free will and pleasure. For many years they failed to achieve this but in the last quarter of a century things have changed dramatically.
Under the direction of the Portfield Recreation Committee and Racecourse Public Parks Trust, a public park of high quality has been developed. This once barren piece of land now has four football pitches, three cricket grounds, two miles of all weather surface paths and many acres of cut grass where people can picnic, fly kites or just generally enjoy open countryside where it is said, the sea air meets the country air.
See separate pages for two recommended walks around the race course, one long, and one short.
